From April 22 to 24, 2026, the Regional Environmental Summit (RES 2026) will take place in Astana, where leaders from various corners of the world will gather to discuss pressing climate and environmental issues in Central Asia, reports the Associated Press.
The event will be held under the motto "A Shared Vision for a Sustainable Future."
The summit is organized by the government of Kazakhstan in collaboration with various international and regional partners. The summit is envisioned as a permanent platform for strategic dialogue, coordination of actions, and the creation of partnerships in the fields of ecology, sustainable development, and climate.
It is expected that RES 2026 will strengthen Astana's status as an international center for developing practical solutions to the region's most urgent environmental issues. Topics for discussion will include water resource shortages, glacier melting, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and increasing pressure on limited natural resources.
The summit program includes three days of high-level plenary sessions and over 20 sessions dedicated to various topics and countries. Participants will address issues related to the transition to a "green" economy that enhances climate resilience, food security, sustainable management of natural resources, as well as financing mechanisms for environmental initiatives. Significant attention will be given to the role of technology, education, and digital solutions in shaping a sustainable future.
Among the summit participants:
• Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan
• Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan
• Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan
• Vahagn Khachaturyan, President of the Republic of Armenia
• Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, President of Mongolia
• Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Economic and Social Affairs
• Feridun H. Sinirlioğlu, Secretary General of the OSCE
• Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO
• Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization
• Dorin Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union
The organizers emphasize that the summit will not only serve as a platform for discussions but also as a catalyst for the implementation of specific joint projects and investment initiatives aimed at strengthening the resilience of the region's energy, water, and food systems.
The initiators hope that RES 2026 will contribute to deepening regional cooperation and implementing practical measures that align with global climate and sustainable development goals.
