The forum will gather representatives of governments, experts, and international organizations
From April 22 to 24, 2026, the Regional Environmental Summit (RES) will be held in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana. This was announced by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
It is expected that around 1500 participants will attend the event, including representatives from government bodies of Central Asian countries, international organizations, development institutions, businesses, and civil society.
During the plenary session, speeches are planned from the presidents of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Mongolia, as well as other high-profile guests.
The goal of the forum is to develop joint solutions to climate and environmental issues in cooperation with the United Nations.
This initiative was announced by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in 2023 and was subsequently reaffirmed at the 80th session in 2025.
Support for RES 2026 has been provided by key partners such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), as well as the International Energy Agency (IEA) and other international and regional organizations.
UN support was formalized by General Assembly resolution 78/147 on December 19, 2023, which emphasizes the need to strengthen regional solidarity in addressing environmental issues in Central Asia.
The summit aims to develop practical and coordinated solutions that reflect a regional approach to climate challenges, including the problem of the Aral Sea, which has become a symbol of ecological disaster, and the ongoing decline in the level of the Caspian Sea.
Among the key priorities of the forum are identifying the real needs of Central Asia in terms of "green" financing, supporting adaptation measures, developing low-carbon technologies, and improving the ecological resilience of the region.
A joint declaration of the Central Asian states on cooperation in the field of ecology and sustainable development is also planned to be adopted at the summit.
Additionally, a regional action program for 2026–2030 will be approved in partnership with UN agencies to achieve a sustainable future for Central Asia.
It is expected that new environmental projects and initiatives in key areas will be launched as part of the summit.
