In its statement, the U.S. Embassy in Iran warned that American citizens may face detentions simply for holding a U.S. passport. The diplomats also noted the likelihood of internet disruptions and flight cancellations.
The publication includes recommendations: “If you cannot leave the premises, find a safe place in your home or another secure building. Ensure you have supplies of food, water, medications, and other essentials. Avoid participating in demonstrations, try to remain inconspicuous, and pay close attention to your surroundings.” Possible routes for departure include land routes through Armenia or Turkey.
In early January, the U.S. deployed a carrier strike group, which included the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln and several destroyers, to the Middle East region. U.S.-Iran negotiations are scheduled for February 6. However, the consultations were threatened with disruption on February 4, when Tehran demanded a change in the format of the meeting, reducing the list of topics to be discussed and proposing to hold the negotiations in Oman instead of Istanbul. Nevertheless, preparations for the meeting have resumed.
