The decision to dissolve the lower house was announced by Takaichi on January 19. The Prime Minister hopes to regain the lost positions of her Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which were lost in the elections on October 27, 2024.
The scheduled elections were supposed to take place only in 2028. However, starting from October 2025, the LDP, which holds a minority in the upper house, continues to maintain power thanks to the support of its junior coalition partner — the right-wing Japan Innovation Party.
