The lower house of parliament in Japan has been dissolved

The procedure for dissolving the lower house of parliament has been carried out in Japan. This was announced by the chairman of the house, Fumio Nukaga, who read the corresponding government initiative on the very first day of the 220th session, as reported by RIA Novosti.

Thus, the decision took effect immediately.

The session, which was planned to last 150 days, actually lasted only 1 minute and 56 seconds.

Prime Minister Sanae Takachi confirmed on Monday her intentions to dissolve the lower house in order to organize new elections. Officially, this decision is explained by the need to take public opinion into account in light of changes in the ruling coalition's composition.

In practice, however, the Prime Minister, who also leads the LDP, hopes that the stable high approval rating of her government will positively influence the results of the 2024 elections, allowing for a significant strengthening of positions in the lower house, where the ruling coalition holds a fragile majority of just one vote.

The elections are scheduled for February 8.
