The accident occurred around 18:40 local time, just ten minutes after the departure of a train operated by the private company Iryo from Córdoba heading to Madrid. The second train, Alvia, owned by the state company Renfe, was traveling from Madrid to Huelva and was moving at a speed of about 200 km/h at the time of the collision.

The causes of the collision have not yet been established. Spain's Transport Minister Óscar Puente noted that the incident on a straight section of track raises many questions. An investigation is being conducted by the railway infrastructure operator Adif.

Emergency services and military personnel were dispatched to the scene of the accident. Rescue operations are ongoing, but access to the site is difficult. Authorities do not rule out that the death toll may rise.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez canceled all scheduled events and took personal control of the situation. The Spanish royal family expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and injured.
