Residents of Berlin to Receive a Ton of Potatoes for Free
A unique initiative has been launched in Germany, where approximately 4 million kilograms of potatoes are being distributed for free to residents and organizations in the capital, reports Kazinform, citing DW.
The project was initiated by the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper in collaboration with the Berlin company Ecosia. According to their estimates, the total weight of the distributed potatoes is comparable to that of about 800 elephants.
With this amount of potatoes, a tower about 350 meters high could be built or hundreds of thousands of people could be fed.
Currently, the top-grade potatoes are stored in a warehouse near Leipzig, where all necessary storage conditions are met, but there are no buyers for them.
The situation arose due to a record harvest: this year, Germany collected more than 13 million tons of potatoes, the highest figure in the last 25 years and 17% above the average long-term level. As a result, producers are facing losses and are forced to spend money on storing surplus products.
One farmer from Saxony proposed to send the surplus potatoes to Berlin, which became the main impetus for this campaign.
