The president did not specify the timeline for the attack

On the Hannity program, broadcast on Fox News, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the intention of American troops to begin ground operations against drug cartels in Mexico.

Trump noted that the U.S. has nearly completely blocked maritime routes for drug shipments from Venezuela and is now focused on combating smuggling coming overland—from Mexico, as reported by Meduza.

“We have blocked 97% of drug trafficking by sea, and now we are starting strikes against the cartels on land. The cartels control Mexico. It is extremely difficult to watch, to see what is happening to this country. The cartels hold all the power and kill between 250,000 to 300,000 people a year in our country,” Trump stated.

However, the president did not provide details about the timing or scale of the upcoming attacks.

It should be noted that the interview with Trump took place shortly after a successful U.S. military operation in Venezuela, where American special forces captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. Washington accuses Maduro of drug trafficking and arms possession, and his wife of similar crimes and receiving bribes. The trial against them is taking place in New York, with Maduro denying all charges.

Before the operation in Venezuela, American forces attacked vessels that, according to Washington, were transporting drugs. It has been reported that over 100 people have died as a result of such actions since September.

Upon returning to the White House, Trump designated six Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, as noted by Euronews. Mexican authorities condemned this decision, considering it a potential justification for military intervention.

Any military operations on Mexican territory without the consent of the Mexican government would violate international law and represent an unprecedented step against an ally and important trading partner of the U.S., emphasizes Euronews. The day before, Trump stated that he makes decisions based not on international norms but on his moral position.
