Mexico stated the safety of the 2026 World Cup after the elimination of the cartel leader

Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, assured that the upcoming football matches of the 2026 World Cup will be safe, despite recent incidents related to violence following the removal of a cartel leader.

During a military operation, Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, who led the "Jalisco New Generation" cartel and is better known as El Mencho, was killed. As a result of his elimination, riots occurred in several states, such as Jalisco and Michoacán: armed groups blocked roads and attacked law enforcement officers. According to official reports, dozens of people died in these clashes.

By the beginning of the week, the situation began to normalize. Authorities reported the restoration of calm in Jalisco, where four matches of the World Cup are scheduled to take place in the city of Guadalajara. Games will also be held in Mexico City at the Azteca Stadium and in Monterrey.

The 2026 World Cup will be organized by Mexico in conjunction with the USA and Canada. The President emphasized that the government is ready to ensure the safety of all guests and participants of the tournament with the necessary resources.
