Fifth Day of the Olympics: Victories of Favorites and New Gender Narratives
On the fifth competitive day of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, the events were filled with significant victories and new records. Some teams continue to demonstrate their strong positions, while for others, such as the Kyrgyzstan national team, the competitions are just beginning.

French Triumph in Biathlon

Éric Perrot from France became the star of the day, winning the individual 20 km race with a time of 47:58.1 and only one miss. The second place went to Italian Tommaso Giacomelli (+52.4), while the bronze medal was awarded to his compatriot Quentin Fillon Maillet (+1:59.5).

Records in Alpine Skiing

Swiss skier Franyo von Almen won his third gold medal in the super-G, becoming the first athlete in the last 58 years to win three gold medals at a single Olympics.

Kyrgyzstan's Performance

Two athletes represent Kyrgyzstan at these Games: skier Timur Shakirov and skier Arthur Saparbekov. Arthur will participate in the freestyle race on February 13, while Timur will compete in the giant slalom and slalom on February 14 and 16, respectively. So far, the Kyrgyzstan national team has no notable achievements.

First Disqualification

On the eve, two South Korean athletes, Dasom Han and Lee I Jin, were disqualified during the qualification round of the classical sprint competition. The reason was the detection of a banned substance — fluorinated wax, known as fluor.

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) confirmed this decision on Tuesday, and the reason was published on Wednesday.

Gender Issues at the Center of Discussions

One of the most discussed moments of the Olympics was the debut of Swedish freestyler Eliz Lundholm — the first openly transgender participant in the Winter Games. Eliz, who is 23 years old, was allowed to compete in the women's mogul under current rules.

However, his performance was not groundbreaking: he placed 25th out of 30 participants (59.22 points) in the qualification and did not advance to the finals.

Lundholm's participation sparked active discussions. The 2026 Olympics may be the last where different rules apply to transgender athletes, as the International Olympic Committee is developing universal guidelines aimed at ensuring a balance between inclusivity and the protection of women's sports.

The situation with the broadcast also caused significant resonance: the American television company NBC was forced to apologize after commentators repeatedly misidentified the athlete's gender.

Gender issues are not limited to this. Although the number of female participants reached a record — about 47%, Nordic combined remains the only discipline in the Winter Games without a women's tournament, which has drawn criticism from female athletes.

Conclusion

The fifth day of the Olympics was not sensational but confirmed existing trends: favorites continue to show their best results, while new sports centers gradually make their mark. For Kyrgyzstan, however, the most important competitions are still ahead.
