A large-scale project for the renewal and construction of public spaces is starting in Bishkek, initiated by the city hall, the municipal enterprise "Bishkekzelenstroy," and district administrations. The goal of this project is not only to renew green plantings but also to completely rethink the infrastructure for recreation: improvements to pedestrian paths in parks and squares, installation of modern lighting, and creation of new leisure areas for residents are planned. Special attention will be paid to creating a comfortable environment in residential areas, which should positively impact the ecological situation in the city.
In the Lenin District, the focus will be on popular places such as the Young Guard Boulevard, Chapayev Park, and the Journalists' Alley. The reconstruction will also affect the square on Chortekov Street and the nearby areas around the "Manas" cinema and the Sh. Termechikov Drama Theater. In the Pervomaisky District, the emphasis will be on key central locations — Duboviy Park, Erkindik Boulevard, and Togolok Moldo Square. Plans also include the restoration of the "Fish" fountain and the creation of new leisure areas on Profsoyuznaya Street and near School No. 54.
The most extensive work is planned in the Sverdlovsk District, where the parks "40 Years of Kyrgyzstan," "Red Builder," and "Kozh zavod" will be renovated, and new green zones will be created in the residential areas of Ak-Bata, Dordoy, and Enesai. Landscaping will also affect the Alamedin-1 microdistrict, and a modern square will appear at the site of the former "Dan" market at the intersection of Saadaev and Kyrgyz Streets. In the Oktyabrsky District, the focus will be on maximizing coverage of microdistricts: plans include the construction of squares in most residential sectors — from the 3rd to the 12th microdistrict, including new leisure areas in Kok-Jar, Kyrman, and Tunguch.
Ecology and urbanism expert Dmitry Pereyaslavsky emphasizes that the development of parks with consideration for walkability directly affects the quality of life and health of citizens. He highlights the importance of having parks within a 5–10 minute walk from home. A key element of success will be the creation of multi-level plantings — a combination of tall trees and shrubs, which will help effectively trap dust, reduce noise levels, and create a stable microclimate.
Expanding green spaces is critically important for Bishkek in light of serious air pollution issues. In winter, the level of fine particulate matter PM2.5 in the capital often exceeds the safe limits set by the WHO, which is related to coal heating and intense traffic. Experts unanimously agree that systematic greening is one of the most effective ways to combat smog, allowing harmful particles to be captured and reducing summer temperatures, which will ultimately make the urban environment healthier and more sustainable.
