Life in the Regions: Japanese Lilac and Mongolian Magnolia – How a Family from Suzaka Opened a Unique Nursery
The Abdulkaharovs have been engaged in horticulture since 2003, and the founder of their business was Zubayir's father, who was the first to bring seedlings of blue spruce from the Issyk-Kul region. Starting with resale, he soon mastered the cultivation of trees from seeds. Over the past ten years, interest in ornamental coniferous trees has significantly increased. The majority of their clients are wholesalers, and three years ago the family built a greenhouse to expand their assortment. "I continue my father's work. We have been dealing with seedlings since childhood. Gradually, other plants were added to the blue spruces. Considering the fertility of the black soil in our region, we erected a greenhouse covering an area of 3 hectares. Not only the soil is important, but also the addition of compost and fertilizers," Zubayir shares.
About 80 species of ornamental plants are presented in the greenhouse, and their geography is diverse:
- roses – 4–5 varieties from Italy and Uzbekistan.
- several species of Japanese lilac.
- exotic plants – 5–6 species of hydrangea, 2 species of magnolia from Mongolia, peonies, and even palms.
Zubayir explains that they do not just bring in plants but also adapt them to local conditions. "We nurture the seedlings ourselves and monitor their health. We only sell those plants that have fully adapted to the climate. It is important for us that the customer is satisfied and the plant takes root," he adds.

Not all foreign plants can adapt to the climate of Kyrgyzstan. For example, thuja from Poland and some varieties of spruces from China have not taken root. Zubayir shares his observations:
- on the condition of the roots: if the leaves are drying but not falling, it means the root system is damaged or there are watering issues.
- on the norm: natural yellowing and shedding of leaves is a normal process.
- on care: regular watering and feeding with vitamins are the keys to ensuring that the seedling blooms in all its glory.
Prices for ornamental plants vary depending on their rarity and age. The cost of seedlings starts from 150 soms, while elite varieties of Japanese lilac can cost up to 70,000 soms. In addition, the gardeners have traditional Tian Shan spruces and various types of thuja available.
According to Zubayir, while municipalities were previously the main clients for greening parks, there is now a growing interest from private homeowners seeking to create beautiful landscapes around their homes.
