Every year on March 5, the Day of the Ak Kalpak is celebrated in Kyrgyzstan, which was established by a resolution of the Jogorku Kenesh on June 29, 2016. The purpose of this day is to preserve and respect the national headwear, support traditions, and awaken pride in Kyrgyz culture. The unofficial celebration of the Day of the Ak Kalpak began back in 2011.

The State Flag of the Kyrgyz Republic was approved on March 3, 1992, and raised at the Government House on March 5. The authors of the flag are E. Aydarbekov, B. Zhaichibekov, S. Iptarov, Zh. Mataev, and M. Sydykov.

On December 22, 2023, President Sadyr Japarov signed a law "On Amendments to the Law of the Kyrgyz Republic 'On the State Symbols of the Kyrgyz Republic,'" which was adopted by the Jogorku Kenesh on December 20, 2023. This law aimed to improve one of the main state symbols—the flag—by changing the wavy shape of the sun rays to a straight line.
