The initiators have sent their requests to the president, the head of the GKNB, and the chairman of the Supreme Court
A group of independent journalists has called on the authorities of Kyrgyzstan to review the criminal cases that have been initiated against their colleagues and civil activists. They announced this on their social media.
In their appeal, they addressed President Sadyr Japarov, head of the State National Security Committee Jumgalbek Shabdanbekov, and Chairman of the Supreme Court Mederbek Satyiev.
Considering the recent personnel changes and structural reforms in the security agencies being carried out by the country's leadership, the activists request attention to the cases concerning representatives of civil society, journalists, and activists who have been held accountable under Article 278 of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan for "Organizing Mass Riots" and other articles.
In their appeal, they express the following requests:
- to conduct an additional review and, if there are grounds, to reconsider the court decisions in the cases of journalists and activists related to Article 278 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic;
- to provide a legal assessment of the validity of the sentences issued;
- to apply the legal mechanisms for rehabilitation in case of identified violations;
- to terminate criminal prosecution in cases where there are insufficient legal grounds;
- to create legal conditions for the return of citizens who left the country due to criminal prosecution;
- to conduct a service and legal assessment of the actions of officials in case of possible procedural violations;
- to consider the issue of compensation for damages in case of established violations of citizens' rights.
The initiators are confident that an objective and open consideration of these issues will contribute to strengthening public trust in state institutions and the further development of Kyrgyzstan based on legality and democratic principles.
