U.S. President Donald Trump stated the need to declassify documents related to extraterrestrial life and UFOs, assigning this task to the Department of Defense. He announced this in his post on the social network Truth Social.

According to Trump, this step is prompted by "huge interest" in the topic.

“I am directing the Secretary of Defense and all relevant agencies to initiate the process of identifying and publishing government materials related to unidentified aerial phenomena, extraterrestrial life, and any other related issues that are extremely interesting and important,” he wrote.

During a recent interaction with the press, Trump also accused his predecessor Barack Obama of leaking classified information following Obama's recent comment about the possibility of extraterrestrial existence. In Trump's opinion, Obama "should not have done that" and "made a serious mistake." However, Trump did not specify what exact classified information Obama disclosed.

Reuters reminds that in an interview with podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama responded to the question of whether aliens exist. The recording of this interview surfaced online last week. "They are real, but I haven't seen them, and they're not kept in... Area 51. Unless there’s some grand conspiracy that’s hiding this from the President of the United States," the former president noted.

Later, Obama released a post on Instagram clarifying his words about extraterrestrial life. He emphasized that the Universe is so vast that the chances of life existing somewhere else are quite high. "During my presidency, I did not see any evidence that aliens had contacted us," he added.

Reuters notes that Obama's statements contained no signs of disclosing any classified information.
