In the last 50 years, there has been significant glacier melting in Kyrgyzstan — about 16 percent. This was reported by Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations Azamat Mambetov at a recent briefing.

According to data from the World Meteorological Organization, the average temperature on Earth has risen by 1.9 degrees, leading to active glacier melting. This, in turn, contributes to the formation of high-altitude lakes, which pose a potential threat of overflow. Currently, there are about 2000 such lakes registered in the country, of which 600 are classified as high-risk.

Azamat Mambetov also noted that in 2024, there was an overflow of the Western Zyndan lake, located in the Ton district of the Issyk-Kul region. Last year, the overflow of the Takyr-Tor lake was recorded twice, which required the evacuation of about a thousand residents.
