"16% of glaciers in Kyrgyzstan have melted over 60 years, - Ministry of Emergency Situations"
The International Meteorological Organization states that with global warming, the temperature on the planet has increased by 1.9 degrees, leading to accelerated glacier melting. As a result, approximately 2000 high-altitude lakes have formed, of which about 600 fall into the first category of danger — they may burst and cause damage to settlements located below.
Mambetov also cited examples of recent incidents. In 2024, the West Zyndan lake burst in the Ton district of the Issyk-Kul region. Last year, the Takyr-Tor lake burst twice, leading to the evacuation of about a thousand people and road closures.
The Deputy Minister noted that the process of glacier melting continues and is intensifying, which increases the volume of water resources and leads to the formation of new lakes that pose a risk of bursting.
