Seventy-five signatories, including scholars, former prime ministers, ex-deputies, and representatives of the public, supported this appeal.
The signatories noted that the current president was elected in 2021 under the old Constitution, and after its amendment in April 2021, disagreements arose regarding the understanding of the presidential term limits.
The appeal emphasizes that after the adoption of the new Constitution, uncertainty emerged in interpreting the terms of office for presidents elected before its enactment. Legal experts and political analysts have split into two groups:
- some argue that early elections are the only correct solution,
- others believe it is necessary to wait for the completion of the six-year term.
The authors of the letter are confident that organizing elections in the near future "would help avoid various interpretations, additional clarifications, public disputes, and possible appeals to the Constitutional Court."
Additionally, the signatories listed the main achievements of the current government, such as resolving issues related to state borders, combating corruption, strengthening the armed forces, and positive changes in the social sphere. However, they also pointed out a number of pressing problems that require immediate resolution: the increase in public debt, rising prices, and the outflow of the indigenous population.
At the moment, the presidential administration has not commented on the appeal calling for early elections.
