Omor Sooronov, a literary scholar, passed away at the age of 86
Today, January 21, 2026, Kyrgyz culture and literature have suffered a heavy loss — the renowned literary scholar Omor Sooronov passed away at the age of 86 after a long illness. This information was provided by the Ministry of Culture, Information, and Youth Policy of Kyrgyzstan.

Omor Sooronov, a distinguished figure in the culture of the Kyrgyz Republic, was a laureate of the State Prize in the field of science and technology, a recipient of the Order of "Manas" III degree, and an honorary professor at the Kyrgyz National University named after Jusup Balasagyn. He was also a member of the Union of Writers of the Kyrgyz Republic and was known as a poet, critic, writer, and researcher of Kyrgyz literature.

Omor Sooronov was born on February 28, 1940, in the village of Gologon, located in the Bazar-Korgon district. In 1967, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Philology of the Kyrgyz State University and began teaching at the Jalal-Abad Pedagogical College named after A. S. Pushkin.

Since 1969, his professional activity was associated with the Institute of Language and Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, where he began working in the sector dedicated to "Manas." Throughout his career, Sooronov held positions as a junior, senior, and leading research fellow, and also worked in the sector of Soviet literature and the manuscript department. From 1979 to 1981, he headed the editorial board of fiction at the "Kyrgyzstan" publishing house, and from 1992 to 1995, he taught at the Kyrgyz State Pedagogical University named after I. Arabayev, continuing his active scientific work until the last days of his life.

Omor Sooronov's creative career began with poetry — his first works were published in 1957, and his debut collection of poems titled "Tooloromdun ziyatyny" was released in 1971. His creative legacy includes eight poetry collections, among which is "Eki togolok" (1993), dedicated to children.

Not only in poetry but also in literary studies and criticism, Sooronov made a significant contribution. He engaged in the research and preparation for publication of works by Kyrgyz authors and historians, translating texts from Arabic and Latin scripts into modern Kyrgyz writing. Among his publications are "Majmu at-tavarikh," "Sanat digarasttar" by Moldu Niyaz, "Kazaldar" by Moldu Kylch, "Kyrgyz tarikhy" by Belek Soltonoev, "Kapashtan chykkan yrlary" by Kasym Tynystanov, "Manas" by Togolok Moldo, and many others.

Among his scientific works, one can note the monograph on the trilogy "Manas," the documentary story "Mukay," and a number of fundamental publications, such as the two-volume "History of Kyrgyz Soviet Literature," the seven-volume "History of Kyrgyz Literature," the two-volume "Kyrgyz Literary Studies and Criticism," as well as "Anthology of Pedagogical Thought of the Kyrgyz SSR." In total, Omor Sooronov published over 400 articles.

The Ministry of Culture expressed confidence that the memory of the bright image of the scholar and cultural figure, who dedicated his life to serving the Kyrgyz people, will remain in the hearts of colleagues, contemporaries, and all lovers of literature.

Deep condolences were also expressed to the family and loved ones of Omor Sooronov.
