Irakli Garibashvili, the former Prime Minister of Georgia, has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined 1 million lari. This was reported by the country's prosecutor's office, according to DW.

Initially, the politician faced a risk of 9 to 12 years of imprisonment. During the investigation, $6.5 million was seized, which was found in his home.

At the end of October, the prosecutor's office officially charged Garibashvili with the legalization of large illegal incomes. According to investigators, between 2019 and 2024, when he served as Minister of Defense and then Prime Minister, Garibashvili was engaged in entrepreneurial activities and disguised the obtained funds as gifts from family members. He also registered property in the names of his relatives.

Garibashvili is a member of the ruling party "Georgian Dream," which was founded in 2011, and he served as the chairman of this party for some time.
