Ex-Prime Minister of Georgia Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Money Laundering

Irakli Garibashvili, the former Prime Minister of Georgia, has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined 1 million lari. This was reported by DW, citing information from the prosecutor's office.
Previously, the politician could have been sentenced to a term of 9 to 12 years for money laundering. During the investigation, 6.5 million dollars were seized from Garibashvili's home.
At the end of October, he was officially charged with legalizing large illegal incomes. According to the investigation, from 2019 to 2024, when he held the positions of Minister of Defense and Prime Minister, Garibashvili engaged in commercial activities and disguised the funds received as gifts from his relatives, as well as transferred property to them.
Garibashvili is a member of the ruling party "Georgian Dream," founded in 2011, and has led this party for some time.
