What is a visa bond?
A visa bond is an amount that must be paid when obtaining a B1/B2 visa. The bond amount can be $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000, and its size is determined by the consular officer during the interview. The bond is collected only if the applicant meets all other criteria for obtaining the visa.
The conditions for the return of the bond include the following points:
- The citizen left the U.S. before the visa expired.
- The visa was not used.
- The applicant was denied entry at the border.
At the same time, the bond may be withheld in the following cases:
- Exceeding the allowed length of stay.
- Illegal stay in the U.S.
- Applying for a change of immigration status, including a request for asylum.
Restrictions for visa bond holders
Visas with a visa bond allow only one entry within three months and require crossing the border through specific airports, such as:
- Boston (BOS)
- New York (JFK)
- Washington (IAD)
Additionally, U.S. border services have the right to limit the length of stay in the country to 30 days.
