Life in the Regions: A Resident of the Village of Kyzyl-Adyr, Who Prepared Sümölök for Nowruz, Saw Signs of Abundance
In an interview with a Turmush correspondent, she shared that for the past 15 years, she has been happily preparing this traditional dish, preserving age-old customs.
“The preparation of sümölök begins with selecting and washing the wheat, after which it is soaked and sprouted. Then, this sprouted wheat is crushed and the juice is squeezed out. Next, flour, oil, and water are added to the cauldron, and everything is cooked over low heat, stirring constantly. To enhance the flavor, stones are placed in the cauldron, and to prevent the sümölök from burning, it must be stirred regularly,” Güljan explained.
According to her, sümölök is a symbol of wealth, unity, and abundance. Preparing this dish for Nowruz is one of the ancient traditions.
“We cook sümölök for seven hours, and then let it steep for the same amount of time. During this time, relatives gather, we sit around the cauldron, and exchange kind wishes. While the sümölök is being prepared, we all wish each other peace and prosperity,” she added.
This year, when the sümölök was ready, Güljan noticed unusual patterns on the surface, resembling embroidery, and in the center—symbols that looked like eyes. She perceived this as a favorable sign.
“This indicates that our people are destined for abundance and happiness. Recently, we have been paying more attention to the traditions of other nations and starting to imitate them. Therefore, I see this as a signal: it is time to return to our own traditions, customs, and values,” she concluded.
