In New York, the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women is taking place, with a delegation from Kyrgyzstan led by Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov, as reported by the press service of the Supreme Court.

The delegation includes Deputy Chair of the Supreme Court Nurgul Bakirova and other high-ranking officials.

During the session, Kyrgyz representatives spoke at the general debates dedicated to measures taken following the Fourth World Conference on Women and the twenty-third special session of the UN General Assembly. Their participation in a high-level meeting on issues of violence against women and girls is also planned.

In her speech, Nurgul Bakirova emphasized that access to justice for women and girls is an important strategic priority for the sustainable development of Kyrgyzstan.

She noted that despite the established principle of gender equality, women and girls in various countries, including Kyrgyzstan, continue to face numerous systemic barriers, such as economic, geographical, informational, and socio-cultural factors.

Bakirova also reminded about the legislative initiatives currently in place at the national level aimed at ensuring gender equality and combating domestic violence. Among these initiatives are the Law on State Guarantees of Equal Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women and the Law on Protection from Domestic Violence.

According to judicial statistics, in 2025, 1,196 cases related to domestic violence were considered in Kyrgyz courts, which is a 24% increase compared to the previous year. Bakirova noted that this growth indicates the ongoing relevance of the problem, as well as an increase in the detection of offenses and trust in the judicial system.

She also mentioned that the National Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality by 2030 is a key document that includes improving legislation, strengthening protection mechanisms, increasing women's participation in public and political life, and supporting their economic independence.

The international forum on gender equality involves representatives from 107 countries. The session will last until March 19, and the main theme of the meeting is ensuring access to justice for all women and girls.
