In 2025, the number of court cases related to domestic violence in Kyrgyzstan increased by almost 24%. This was reported by Nurgul Bakirova during her speech at the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York. According to her, 1,196 such cases were considered in the courts over the year.
This increase, Bakirova believes, indicates the importance of the problem, as well as the rise in the detection of offenses and the trust of citizens in the judicial system.
The Kyrgyz delegation, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baysalov, is participating in the work of the 70th session of the UN Commission, where general debates are taking place on the implementation of the resolutions of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the special session of the UN General Assembly.
In her speech, Bakirova emphasized that access for women and girls to justice remains one of the main strategic priorities for sustainable development in Kyrgyzstan. She noted that in many countries, including Kyrgyzstan, women and girls face economic, geographical, informational, and socio-cultural barriers.
She also mentioned the existing laws in the country, such as "On State Guarantees of Equal Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women" and "On Protection from Domestic Violence," as well as the National Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality by 2030.
The annual international forum on gender equality gathers representatives from 107 countries. The session will last until March 19, and this year's main theme is ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls.
