Edil Baisalov: The time has come, a woman should lead the UN

This statement by the Deputy Prime Minister was made at the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

At the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, taking place in New York, the Deputy Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Edil Baisalov, expressed the initiative for the election of a woman to the position of UN Secretary-General.

In his speech, Baisalov emphasized that Kyrgyzstan actively supports gender equality and the rights of women and girls, as well as fulfilling its commitments outlined in the Beijing Declaration, the Platform for Action, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The politician noted that Kyrgyzstan is implementing a consistent policy aimed at strengthening the rule of law, creating economic opportunities for women, and combating violence against them, adhering to the principle of zero tolerance for such crimes and improving legislative and protective mechanisms.

Baisalov also added that the world cannot confidently speak about women's rights while ignoring the suffering of women in conflict zones. He emphasized that the protection of women's rights must be an integral part of international security and that the UN should set an example in matters of equality. "After almost eight decades of the organization's existence, it is time for a woman to take the position of Secretary-General, and this has long been overdue," he stated.
