Deputy Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Edil Baisalov spoke at the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, held at the United Nations headquarters in New York. In his speech, he emphasized the country's unwavering commitment to promoting gender equality and protecting the rights of women and girls, as well as fulfilling international obligations arising from the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Baisalov highlighted that under the leadership of President Sadyr Japarov, the Kyrgyz Republic is implementing consistent measures to strengthen the rule of law, expand economic opportunities for women, and combat violence against them. He noted that Kyrgyzstan adheres to a zero-tolerance policy towards such crimes and continues to improve legislative and protective mechanisms.
In his speech, he also emphasized the necessity of adhering to international law norms and the principles of the UN Charter, as well as protecting civilians, especially women and children, in the context of modern conflicts.
“The international community cannot ignore the suffering of women in conflict zones if it wants to talk about women's rights. Their protection must become a fundamental part of international security,” Edil Baisalov noted.
He also pointed out that the UN must become a role model in matters of equality.
“After nearly eighty years of existence of the Organization, it is time for a woman to be entrusted with the position of UN Secretary-General. This is long overdue,” he added.
The delegation of the Kyrgyz Republic, which includes representatives of the Supreme Court, the Prosecutor General's Office, various ministries, and the Ombudsman Institute, is actively participating in plenary sessions, thematic discussions, and side events at the 70th session of the Commission.
During the session, a series of national events and presentations aimed at promoting women's rights, strengthening justice institutions, and expanding opportunities for women and girls are also planned.
