To save the Caspian Sea, 1.1 billion tenge (about 2.2 million dollars) has been allocated by the decision of the Kazakh government. The resolution to allocate the funds was signed by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektanov.
The main recipient of the budget funds will be the Kazakh Research Institute of the Caspian Sea. The allocated funds will be used to modernize the institute's technical base, including the acquisition of modern equipment for marine monitoring and the establishment of new hydrobiological and hydrochemical laboratories. This will enable scientists to conduct comprehensive research in the water area, tracking changes in the biological and meteorological environment.
The issue of preserving the Caspian Sea has become particularly urgent against the backdrop of its rapid shallowing. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev previously characterized the situation at a UN session as a "global alarm signal," pointing to the threat of an ecological disaster.
As part of a comprehensive approach to addressing this issue, Kazakhstan plans to create a Center for Water Problem Analysis in Astana with the support of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). A major regional environmental summit dedicated to the protection of the Caspian Sea is also scheduled to be held in the capital of the republic in April 2026.
