The Government of Kazakhstan has allocated over $2 million to study the causes of the Caspian Sea's shallowing

The allocated funds will be used to improve the scientific base of the institute, including the acquisition of new equipment for marine monitoring, as well as for equipping hydrobiological and hydrochemical laboratories. This will allow for comprehensive monitoring in the Caspian Sea's waters and conducting systematic observations of hydrometeorological and biological parameters, significantly expanding the scientific knowledge about the processes occurring in the Kazakh part of the sea, as stated in the official announcement.

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources has been tasked with ensuring the implementation of this decree, while the Ministry of Finance will oversee the proper expenditure of budgetary funds.

In September 2022, Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, at a UN meeting, called for international cooperation on the protection of the Caspian Sea, emphasizing that the issue of shallowing is becoming increasingly urgent and requires global attention.

Tokayev also seizes opportunities to raise this topic at international forums. For instance, speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, he noted that the shallowing of the sea could lead to an ecological disaster.

In response to this threat, the president proposed establishing an Analytical Center for Water Issues in Astana with the support of the SCO and announced the holding of a regional ecological summit in Astana in April 2026.
