The sentence for journalist Kanyshay Mamyrkulova has been changed.
According to the new court ruling, Mamyrkulova was acquitted under Article 330 "Incitement of racial, ethnic, national, religious, or interregional hostility" of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, but she was found guilty under Article 278 "Calls for active disobedience to the lawful demands of representatives of power and for mass riots" of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. The court reduced the probation supervision period from four years to three years.
The defense believes that the elements of the crime under the article "Calls for mass riots" are absent and that Mamyrkulova's guilt was not proven. Nevertheless, they are satisfied that she was acquitted under the other article.
Journalist Kanyshay Mamyrkulova was detained on March 20, 2025, on charges of "Calls for mass riots" and "Incitement of racial, ethnic, national, religious, and interregional hostility" under the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic.
In defense of Mamyrkulova, journalists and human rights organizations sent an open letter to the president and other law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that her arrest threatens her health and violates her right to freedom of speech.
The October District Court of Bishkek previously sentenced Mamyrkulova to six years in prison with a probation period of four years, during which she is prohibited from posting on social media and leaving her home from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
