At a recent meeting of the committee of the Jogorku Kenesh, which deals with constitutional legislation and local self-government, deputies reviewed three projects for a new anthem selected by a special commission.

Dr. Chynar Umetalieva, head of the Department of Cultural Studies and Art Studies at the Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, shared her thoughts on the need for changes to the anthem after listening to the proposed options. She was also a member of the commission established by the Ministry of Culture to select a new anthem.

“Anthems are created by experienced composers. Not everyone is capable of this. I was surprised when the Jogorku Kenesh decided to entrust the people with writing the anthem. We spent a year on its selection. People participated, but the proposed options did not meet the criteria for an anthem. Our current anthem is magnificent — both in text and music. The composers who created it followed all the rules of art. We selected three worthy options; all other proposals had nothing to do with an anthem,” noted Chynar Umetalieva.

As a result of the discussion, all proposed options were rejected by the committee members, who emphasized the need to continue working and searching for the perfect anthem.

The idea of reissuing the anthem was voiced in 2024 by the Speaker of Parliament Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu. Later, it was supported by the president. As a result, an interdepartmental commission was created to select a new anthem, with plans to complete this process by April 2025.
