Five meters of snow and a paralyzed city: what is happening in Kamchatka

In Kamchatka, particularly in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a strong cyclone has led to a sharp deterioration in weather conditions, paralyzing all urban life. In this regard, the authorities have declared a state of emergency. Due to the unprecedented amount of precipitation, streets, yards, and entrances have been buried under multi-meter snowdrifts, making public transport nearly impossible.

According to local media, in some areas, the snow cover reaches the height of the second and third floors of residential buildings. There is even information that in some places, snowdrifts have risen to the height of four-story buildings.
Many residents cannot open the doors of their homes and are forced to leave through windows or dig tunnels in the snow. Utility services and rescuers are working around the clock; however, the volume of snow significantly exceeds the capabilities of the available equipment.
Unfortunately, as a result of snow masses sliding off roofs, tragic incidents have occurred — at least two people have died. Authorities and the Ministry of Emergency Situations warn of increased avalanche danger and risks of further collapses, urging citizens to avoid being under eaves and not to attempt to clear roofs themselves.

Snowfalls have also negatively affected logistics and supplies: some stores are experiencing supply disruptions, many institutions and enterprises have switched to remote work, and classes in schools have been temporarily suspended.

Forecasters claim that the region is facing one of the harshest winters in recent years. Adverse weather conditions are expected to persist, and recovery from the cyclone may take a long time.
