Kyrgyzstan Calls for Priority Access to Climate Financing for Mountain Regions
During the Global Summit on Sustainable Development Goals, the Deputy Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, Bakyt Torobayev, called for attention to be paid to mountainous regions in the context of the international climate agenda. This information was announced by the press service of the Kyrgyz Cabinet.
He emphasized that ecosystems in mountainous areas are under serious threat due to climate change. Processes such as glacier melting and changes in precipitation, as well as the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, pose long-term threats to water supply, agriculture, and energy both in Central Asia and beyond.
The Kyrgyz side proposed to consider mountainous countries and regions as unique zones for sustainable development, granting them priority in receiving climate financing, adaptation technologies, and monitoring systems.
According to Bakyt Torobayev, the stability of mountainous territories has a direct impact on the water and food security of millions of people, which requires comprehensive and coordinated solutions at the international level.
