In a new study conducted by scientists from China, it was found that the consumption of meat is not an obstacle to maintaining health and longevity if the diet is balanced. This data was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Meat is an important source of amino acids that affect the mTOR molecule, which plays a role in the aging process. Previous studies have shown that abstaining from meat can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, a completely plant-based diet can lead to bone problems and increase the risk of fractures, which is especially dangerous for older adults.

The study analyzed data from 5,203 participants over the age of 80 from a centralized medical database in China. All participants did not suffer from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, or cancer. Of these, 80% regularly consumed meat, while the others followed a vegetarian diet and only occasionally included animal products.

The researchers also took into account the body mass index of the participants. The results showed that among underweight vegetarians, only 24% reached the age of 100, whereas among those who ate meat, this figure was nearly 30%. The likelihood of reaching such an advanced age increased for those who consumed meat daily.

The scientists suggest that this difference may be related to the fact that meat contains a lot of protein, which helps strengthen muscles and bones — this is particularly important for older adults and those who are underweight.

The researchers recommend that older adults adhere to the principles of balanced nutrition, including a sufficient amount of whole grains, vegetables, and fruits in their diet.

The authors of the study emphasize that both meat-based and vegetarian diets can have both positive and negative effects depending on their nutritional value and individual health characteristics.
