How the authorities plan to save the fish stocks of Kyrgyzstan from poachers

At a recent meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic, Deputy Bolotbek Borbiev emphasized the problem of poaching, particularly in the context of the Toktogul Reservoir. He highlighted the need to combat the use of banned Chinese synthetic nets and the importance of restoring fish stocks in this region.

In response to his request, the Department of Fisheries, operating under the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, announced the start of an extensive plan for stocking water bodies. According to Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 636 dated October 6, 2025, which imposed a moratorium on commercial fish catches, a significant number of carp (common carp) fry will be released into five reservoirs across the country in October 2026. The Toktogul Reservoir will be the main site, receiving 150,000 young individuals. The Kirov Reservoir will receive 100,000 fry, while the Bazar-Korgon Reservoir will get 10,000. The Shamalty-Sai and Tash-Kumyr reservoirs will each be replenished with 5,000 fry.

In addition to restoring the fish population, government agencies are strengthening control over water bodies. The Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision, in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic, conducts regular raids on key reservoirs such as Toktogul, Bazar-Korgon, and Kurp-Sai. The main goal of these inspections is to completely prevent illegal fishing and combat the use of poaching gear that poses a threat to the country's ecology.
