Migrants sent almost 3 billion dollars from Russia to Kyrgyzstan

In 2025, the Kyrgyz Republic recorded a historically high level of remittances, reaching $3.5 billion, which accounts for 15.4% of the country's gross domestic product, according to the macroeconomic review by the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB).

The main source of this growth was transfers from Russia, which increased by 16.1%, amounting to approximately $2.99 billion. Analysts also emphasize that the strengthening of the Russian ruble against the dollar, which amounted to 24% year-on-year by the end of 2025, contributed to the increase in the volume of transfers in dollar terms. At the same time, the som, the national currency of Kyrgyzstan, remained stable, weakening by only 0.5% against the dollar over the entire past year.

Additionally, transfers from the United States also showed significant growth, exceeding $100 million for the year, indicating a diversification of income sources for migrants. The increase in the volume of transfers has already reflected on the economy: domestic trade turnover in 2025 increased by 17.8%, which is associated with rising consumer demand.

According to EDB forecasts, remittances will continue to support the national currency in 2026. The average exchange rate of the som is expected to be 89.2 per US dollar, and the republic's economy is expected to maintain its leadership in the region, demonstrating a GDP growth rate of 9.3%.
