- At the "Agrodialog" forum, which took place on February 18, university student Asema Azamatova shared data on the potential yield of okra in Kyrgyzstan. She noted that with careful selection of variety and adherence to agronomic conditions, it is possible to obtain up to 800 kg of okra from a plot of 10 ares.

Azamatova emphasized that okra is a promising crop due to its high nutritional value and stable demand in international markets.

“This crop is characterized by low calorie content and a rich supply of vitamins A and C, as well as minerals such as potassium and calcium. In the conditions of Kyrgyzstan, by following agronomic standards and properly selecting varieties, farmers can expect a yield of up to 800 kg from 10 ares, while in more developed countries this figure reaches 4 tons,” she added.

According to her, okra prefers a warm climate and grows best in the southern regions of Kyrgyzstan—Batken, Osh, and Jalal-Abad, as well as in some areas of the Chui region. This plant does not have strict requirements for soil type, but the best results are observed in loose, well-drained soils with neutral pH.

For sowing 10 ares, about 1.5-2 kg of seeds are needed. Okra can be used both fresh and after processing, including freezing, drying, and canning.

Globally, the main producers of okra are countries in Asia, with India leading in production volumes. The grown produce is mainly exported to countries in the Middle East and Europe, which opens up opportunities for developing export potential in Kyrgyzstan as well.

Note: Okra is an annual herbaceous plant that prefers a warm climate and has high drought resistance. This plant has a powerful root system, and in wild varieties growing in their natural habitat, the taproot can penetrate the soil to a depth of 1-1.5 meters.
