Academician of the National Academy of Sciences: Kyrgyzstan loses up to 30% of its harvest due to insufficient processing
Akimaliev noted that globally, food losses reach 50%. "If we can preserve 95% of the products through processing, it will be a significant achievement," he added.
He stated that processing can significantly increase the profitability of agricultural products: "Currently, the profitability of some goods is only 15%, while after processing it can rise to 60%. For example, this applies to milk, potatoes, and sugar beets."
The scientist also provided examples of potato processing: "From it, we can produce starch, chips, French fries, and flour. Six kilograms of potatoes yield one kilogram of starch. Why aren't we doing this? It creates added value and new jobs."
According to him, wheat processing also opens up new opportunities: "From it, we can obtain flour, cereals, alcohol, and from straw – animal feed."
"Meat processing is also extremely important. Where are our sausages, frankfurters, smoked and boiled sausages? We have enormous potential for this," Akimaliev stated.
He emphasized that to address these tasks, large enterprises are needed, such as meat processing plants and dairy factories in every region, as well as factories for processing fruits, vegetables, and potatoes. "If we can increase the level of agricultural product processing to 25% in five years, it will be a significant success for our agriculture," concluded the academician.
Akimaliev added that the development of processing directly depends on state support and attention from the President and the government, as well as on specific actions from all ministries.
