Mojtaba Khamenei
According to sources, Mojtaba Khamenei is in serious condition and cannot participate in the governance of the country. This information was recorded in a diplomatic note that was passed to U.S. allies in the Persian Gulf.
The city of Qom, located about 140 kilometers south of Tehran, is considered a holy site where the late Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba's father and the previous supreme leader, who was killed on February 28, is planned to be buried. According to The Times, his body is being prepared for burial.
The funeral of Ali Khamenei has been postponed by the Iranian authorities, who are expecting "unprecedented turnout" at the ceremony, which raises questions, as according to Shia tradition, the deceased are usually buried immediately after death. April 8 will mark 40 days since his passing, which signifies the end of the traditional mourning period in Shia Islam.
Mojtaba Khamenei was injured on the same day that U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran began, February 28. On that day, his father, Ali Khamenei, was killed. On March 7, Israeli Channel 12 reported on his injuries, and later The New York Times clarified that Mojtaba sustained leg injuries. Shortly after, the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed that he was injured but "feels well." Since his appointment as the new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared in public.
