At a briefing for journalists, Guterres emphasized that the war has been ongoing for more than three weeks and has now exceeded acceptable limits. "The world is on the brink of a more serious conflict, which will lead to increased suffering for people and significant global economic problems," he noted.
The UN Secretary-General called on all parties involved in the conflict to adhere to international law.
He also urged the United States and Israel to halt military actions, while recommending that Iran cease aggressive actions against neighboring countries not involved in the conflict.
Guterres added that it is important to ensure the protection of rights and freedoms of navigation in key maritime routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz.
"Closing the strait for an extended period complicates the transportation of oil, gas, and fertilizers, which is occurring at a critically important time for the global planting season," he said.
On the eve, the United States proposed a 15-point peace plan to Iran, to which Tehran responded with a demand for the withdrawal of all American military bases from the Persian Gulf region.
