Trump criticized NATO allies for refusing to participate in the operation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic point through which about 20% of the world's oil supplies pass. Its effective closure due to escalating conflict has already impacted global energy markets. According to Reuters, oil prices have surged, and some shipping and insurance companies have begun to limit their activities in the region.
U.S. allies have shown restraint in response to Washington's calls. Germany noted that this is "not their war," France refused to participate in the operation "in the current context," and Japan has no plans to send its forces to escort vessels for now. Nevertheless, several countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan, have expressed their willingness to support safe navigation, but on the condition that hostilities cease.
Trump had previously warned that if allies do not assist in unblocking the strait, NATO's future could be "very bad." Furthermore, AP and Axios reported that after the majority of partners declined, the White House began considering the possibility of unilateral U.S. actions.
