In the city of Kermanshah, Iran, three people were executed, convicted of killing two police officers during protests that erupted earlier this year, Reuters reports, citing Iranian state television.

The court found them guilty of murder and "moharebeh," which translates to "enmity against God," as well as actions that serve the interests of the U.S. and Israel. According to authorities, the men participated in armed attacks on police officers on January 8, resulting in the deaths of two law enforcement officials.

On March 18, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard confirmed the execution of a Swedish citizen in Iran. She reported that this individual was detained in June 2025, and Swedish authorities had repeatedly attempted to secure his release.

Protests against the government began in Iran on December 28, 2025, triggered by a worsening economic situation, including the decline of the national currency and a sharp rise in prices. Unrest spread across many cities. According to Iran International, more than 36,500 people died during the protests on January 8-9. The independent human rights organization HRANA, based in the U.S., confirmed that at least 7,000 civilians died during the January unrest. On January 21, Iran's Attorney General announced the complete suppression of the demonstrations.
