On March 17, Argentina officially withdrew from the World Health Organization (WHO), confirming this decision was the country's Foreign Minister Pablo Kirno. The notification of the termination of membership was sent to UN Secretary-General António Guterres exactly one year ago.

Kirno noted on the social network X that Argentina will continue to develop international cooperation in the field of health through bilateral agreements and regional forums, while emphasizing its commitment to sovereignty and independent decision-making.

President Javier Milei justified the country's exit from the WHO by disagreeing with the organization's policies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump also made a similar decision to withdraw from the WHO, which took effect at the end of January. The U.S. became the first country to leave the organization, founded in 1948 and comprising more than 190 states. Trump criticized the WHO for corruption, inefficiency, and susceptibility to pressure from China and other countries.

Due to the decisions of Argentina and the U.S., the WHO plans to reduce its staff by 25% by the end of this year.
