The most expensive guitar in the world: David Gilmour's 'Black Stratocaster' from Pink Floyd sold at auction for $14.6 million

This guitar, named the "Black Stratocaster," now holds the top spot on the list of the most expensive guitars ever sold. Information about the new owner has not yet been disclosed.

The auction house Christie’s initially estimated the instrument to be worth between two and four million dollars.

Previously, the most expensive guitar was the acoustic-electric model "Martin D-18E," released in 1959. It belonged to Kurt Cobain, the frontman of the band Nirvana, and was used by him during the legendary MTV Unplugged concert in 1993. This guitar was sold for $6 million in 2020.

At the same auction, another guitar belonging to Kurt Cobain was presented — a blue Fender Mustang, which he used to record the music video for the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Its price was $6.9 million.

The sale of these musical instruments took place as part of the auction of the estate of American billionaire Jim Irsay, who passed away in 2025. Among the lots were other musical instruments that belonged to famous rock musicians.
