It was recently reported that unknown attackers managed to hack the account of Arndt Freitag von Loringhoven, who previously held the position of deputy president of the Federal Intelligence Service of Germany (BND) and served as the ambassador of Germany in Poland and the Czech Republic. This was reported by DW.
As it turned out, the fraudsters posed as a trusted person and asked von Loringhoven to enter his PIN code in the Signal messenger. After fulfilling this request, the 69-year-old former diplomat discovered that his contacts received a link to a suspicious website from his account. In this regard, he warned all acquaintances not to click on this link and decided to delete his account.
Von Loringhoven and the publication Der Spiegel link this incident to a large campaign by Russian hackers. In February, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution had already reported that such a campaign was targeting officials, military personnel, and journalists. Among the victims of such attacks were high-ranking German politicians and security personnel.
