The President of the United States announced possible serious military consequences for Iran.
On March 10, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, issued a threat to Iran, stating that if the republic had laid mines in the Strait of Hormuz and they were not removed, the consequences for the country would be unprecedented, reports the Anadolu Agency.
On his page on the social network Truth Social, Trump noted: “If mines have been laid and are not removed immediately, Iran will face military consequences that are unparalleled.” He also emphasized that removing the mines would be “a huge step in the right direction.”
At the same time, Trump added that the U.S. has no confirmation that Tehran has actually laid mines in this strategically important waterway.
This warning was a reaction to a CNN report that Iran had begun to place mines in the strait. Agency sources reported that only a few dozen mines have been laid so far, but Iran retains up to 90% of its fleet of small boats and mine vessels, which gives it the capability to lay many more mines.
The Strait of Hormuz is known to be a key hub for global energy, through which about 20 million barrels of oil pass daily. Earlier, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the closure of the strait for transit following the start of U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, which led to a rise in oil prices and concerns about potential prolonged disruptions in energy supplies worldwide.
The escalation of the conflict in the Middle East began after a joint attack by Israel and the U.S. on Iran on February 28, resulting in the deaths of over 1,200 people, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Since the beginning of the conflict, there have also been casualties among American servicemen — at least eight people.
