Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian Addresses the Nation for the First Time Since the Start of the War
Pezeshkian noted that the new temporary governing body will follow the course set by the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
According to him, "With God's help, the council will continue the path of the Imam and our dear leader. The Iranian Armed Forces will continue to strike at the enemy's military targets," the president added.
He also emphasized that the attempt by the U.S. and Israel to "achieve their goals" through the assassination of the leader will not succeed, and that his mission will continue. Pezeshkian called on citizens to gather in the streets and mosques to "disrupt the enemies' plans" and pray for the country.
Ali Khamenei passed away on February 28 as a result of a joint military operation by the U.S. and Israel. His residence in Tehran was attacked during a meeting of the top leadership, resulting in the deaths of family members and high-ranking military officials, including representatives of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Ministry of Defense. Khamenei had led Iran since 1989. A 40-day mourning period has been declared in the country.
The interim council was established in accordance with Article 111 of the Iranian Constitution. Its composition includes the president, the head of the Supreme Court, and one of the members of the Guardian Council of the Constitution. This body will govern the country until a new supreme leader is elected, who will be appointed by the 88 members of the Assembly of Experts.
According to information from the ILNA agency, it is possible that former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was killed in the attacks on the Narmak area in Tehran, although there has been no official confirmation of this information yet.
