On February 27, an incident occurred involving tram number 9 on Viale Vittorio Veneto in Milan, which was heading to Porta Genova, reports the Kazinform agency citing Euronews.
The tram lost control and crashed into a building, hitting pedestrians and damaging a storefront. Rescuers reported two fatalities and approximately 40 injured, one of whom is in critical condition.
The investigative authorities in Milan have opened a case on charges of involuntary manslaughter. According to preliminary expert assessments, the cause of the incident may have been a "collision at high speed."
According to information from the newspaper Corriere della Sera, the derailed tram was a new model, Tramlink, which had only been in operation in the city for a few weeks. Among the possible causes of the accident are a sudden deterioration in the driver's condition or a malfunction of the switch mechanism. 13:42
