According to information from RIA Novosti, only about 10% of ocean inhabitants are known to humanity.
According to Andrey Gebruk, Doctor of Biological Sciences and head of the ocean benthic fauna laboratory at the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, there is no unified answer to the question of how many animal species inhabit the ocean. He noted that estimates suggest we are familiar with only 10-20% of marine organisms.
Gebruk added that the percentage of known species tends towards 10.
“I believe that we have described and seen only 10% of all species that exist in the ocean. This is extremely low,” he concluded.
