According to information from The New York Times, Khamenei, in early January amid protests and threats from the U.S., tasked his associate Ali Larijani with coordinating the management of the state. Since then, as the publication notes, 67-year-old Larijani, who previously held key positions in the security system, has effectively become one of the main managers of the country, overshadowing President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Reports indicate that Khamenei set the task of ensuring stability of power in the face of potential external threats, such as military actions and attempts on the highest leadership. In particular, he established several levels of succession for key state and military positions.

According to the information, leaders were advised to identify up to four possible successors, and decision-making powers were delegated to a narrow circle of trusted individuals in case communication with the Supreme Leader is lost or his death occurs.

Earlier, the Axios portal reported that the U.S. is considering various options for exerting pressure on Iran, including the possibility of eliminating the Supreme Leader and his son.
